Federal CBAE Grant Awarded
The Center was awarded a five year federal grant to develop and implement a community based abstinence education program. The highly competitive grant was received September 30, 2008 from the US Department of Health and Human Services. The program titled Step Up Now to Healthy Relationships serves youth aged 12 to 18, encouraging and equipping them to make healthy relationship choices including the choice of abstaining from sexual activity until marriage. Visit www.aksunspot.com for more information.
Care Net Pregnancy Center is the grantee (recipient of the award). Receiving a federal grant does not affect the faith based status of the Center, it simply means that no federal funds may be used for religious activities. This grant is a perfect fit with the Center’s corporate status as a religious organization in two key ways:
- The strict guidelines for this particular grant are perfectly aligned with Christian values and principles.
- The majority of the out reach of the new program is to the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District which also does not allow religious activities or instruction.
The location for Step Up Now is 950 Cowles Street at the Arctic Bowl Building. Step Up Now occupies the suite that was the former location of the Party Palace. A completely donated remodeling project prepared 450 square feet of the site for the new program operations and administrative offices. The remainder of the space is a 1900 square foot youth activity center and a coffee bar where our outreach will include an after school program for middle schoolers. The coffee bar will be completed after the construction season slows down this fall/winter. We will launch our after school program in September
